Salt Dog Slim's Festive Feast - hotdog eating competiton

Hot Dog jumping frog ...

Every first Sunday of the month Salt Dog Slim's, situated on 79-83 Seel street, the emporium of world beers and bespoke cocktails bought to you (those who know the thriving Liverpool bar scene well) from the creators of Santa Chupitos and El Bandito just around the corner.

The standard monthly challenge is the quickest time to eat 5 hot dogs plain or with the sauce of your choice and one stein , with seasonal variations including shots of jager, pretzels, chicken and mince pies.

Heres a video courtedsy of Simon Taylor of Aloha Bar one of our first comps back in the summer ...

October saw a very popular hot dog eating competition in the style of 'OKTOBERFEST' ... With plenty of Jager from the bar top, full umpa pa band and obligatory pretzels as part of the challenge of course.

November saw a break in the monthly competition, mainly for the safety of the devoted regulars who with such gusto enter every time as the Christmas show down was sure to be one not to miss ...

December 2nd 2012 saw the mighty return of the Steins and Brines challenge with an increased prize fund from the normal £200 to the following :

  • £200
  • 4 books for Dad's christmas present
  • Smellies for Mum's christmas present
  • 6 seasonal craft beers
  • 3 bottles of premium spirits
  • An Xbox 360
  • Two Xbox games
  • And it goes without saying a Salt ddog millionaire T-shirt along with man points and bragging rights.

Heres how the competition panned out -

Prepping the dogs.
The Challenge.
Team Salt Dog's representing.

The glorious winner Danny Cunningham.

However there was a slight twist to this months competition because the prize was so good the anti had to be 'upped' ... considerably.
Insted of the straight forward fastest time wins , the fastest time to get through 4 hot dogs, a mince pie and a stein could then walk away with £100 (after only paying £15 to enter) OR twist and take on THE ATOMIC DOG.
Sounds simple but if you are a stranger to this sauce then approach with caution.

Dave's Insanity sauce
  • Premiered in 1993
  • Made directly from an exctract called capsaicin extract, the first of its kind to do so allowing it to be the hottest habanero-peppar sauce of the day.
  • Rated 180,000 scoville units in comparison with 2,500 ofTabasco ! (the sauce used on the dog in the competition.
  • Dave Hirschkop founder of the sauce would wear a straitjacket to promotion events.
  • Dave's Ultimate insanity (not the one used on the dog) rated 90,000 - 250,000 'Keep away from eyes, children and pets. Not for people with heart or respiratory problems.'
  • Dave's Private Reserve comes in a coffin-shaped packaging and has been reported at 500,000 - 750,000 scoville units. It's all a bit silly !
So here is how Danny the champion's attempt (obviously he twisted to win more prizes who wouldnt):

It's not big and it's not clever but that really is how much hot sauce was on the dog !
To be that little bit more evil - if that wa even possible there was an ice cold glass of milk sat next to the Atomic dog and it was not allowed to be touched untill the dog was finished !

 Broken man.
 Last bite ...
 VICTORY !
Danny with the directors of the bar and his winnings !

Untill next month ! Obviously there was a round of Jagers bought by the winner for everyone in the bar and some Santa Claus's joined in too !

If you havent been nefore I highly recommend this event it is always a rammed bar and the challenge and prizes are getting more and more entertaining and desirable !

Ice Ice Edwards

Edwards the eskimo

At 81LTD the bartenders carve their own blocks of ice to place in straight up drinks such as the Lucky Strike on the menu, an old fashioned style drink.

Filling a large water tight container with water, then placing it in a dump freezer, the block then comes out huge and is whittled down and lovingly separated smaller and smaller, quite literally carved into the perfect shape for each glass. It looks like a lot of fuss over nothing but I think it's worth it.

Here is Chris's effort:

Dogging in Hampstead - Dach & Son's

Dach & Sons New York style eatery

Hot dogs - the new micro trend.

So we took a trip to London, Hampstead to be precise. A rare occasion for myself but John, my manager and accomplice is a seasoned visitor.
Obviously not actual dogging, Hot dogs silly !
From the team behind the successful Purl and Worship street Whistling shop, Fluid movement have tried hand at their first venture to serve food. Delicious premium gourmet burgers and sliders (baby burgers, veggie included) and of course four kinds of hot dog.

The beautiful listed building dates back to the 1800's and they have not let is lose all it's period charm. As you sit and enjoy your food the taste and experience is most definitely accentuated by the surroundings. A stripped back aesthetic with an industrial feel is not for everyone but the balance between tactile 1960's wooden, vintage bar stools against metallic surfaces and strong lighting (including a neon hotdog sign obviously) lends its self well to the minimal custom made feel that personally I love.

Grub.
Dogs and Sliders.
Pooch.
Never make eye contact whilst eating a dog.
Mac and Cheese
Sweet potato chunky chips.

Overall the food was just as expected, very tasty and not at all overpriced for the quality, service and surroundings. John enjoyed his special formula hotdogs however as a very hungry vegetarian I found my Mac and Cheese portion left me wanting more - I am not a rabbit.
After talking to the chaps who where working there that day, I discovered a genuine passion in the science behind the avant-garde cocktails - naturally stemming from the company's background, but it seems this care and attention has gone into both the food (they have their own butcher who works solely for Dach&Son's using locally sourced meats, that's nice isn't it)and the selection of craft beers to the premium whiskey library.

Drinks.
Craft Beers,
Cream Gin - distilled on site.
Shelves cracking under the choice of bourbon and rye.

Five Dollar Thursdays @ Santa Chupitos

So the history behind Santa's building on Slater Street but the corner that meets with Parr street (L! 4BX) is that before becoming the bar three years ago it was previously a dairy.

I like this because the most famous drink that brings in the most punters and a lot of the time the reason why they have regulars that keep coming back for more is THE $5 !

This is John Ennis the director of the company making one for you ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxKRhvjRcd8

So we had a play around with flavours and from now till New Year shall be creating some new flavours in variation to the recipe above and every Thursday show casing a new flavour , guests must ambassador their favourite flavour to the bartenders and through the bars facebook pages and the like so that eventually a victor can be made a permanent fixture on the menu - yummy !!!

The finished product still yet to name him though :
  • Irish cream
  • Mint
  • Oreos
  • Milk
  • Ice Cream
  • Squirty Cream top

As if I couldn't plug the night much more the soundtrack to your evening is DJ Rasp and he's dead good at music and stuff  - see
